Whatcom Creek and Lake Whatcom Concern
The City of Bellingham has experienced unprecedented weather in the last month. The latest challenge has been the snow melt and high rainfall that together caused flooding throughout the city. Fortunately our general flooding issues in the city appear to be resolving due to improved weather conditions and the actions of city staff.
As of this morning, Lake Whatcom and Whatcom Creek remain a concern. It is anticipated that at approximately 12:00 noon today the city will be mandated by law to fully open the flood gates at Lake Whatcom. This action may increase the present flow in Whatcom Creek. We hope that the creek system can accommodate this flow but businesses located in low areas adjacent to Whatcom Creek need to be aware of a possibility of increases in water levels.
We are sensitive to the needs of local businesses and residents and will continue to provide information as conditions change. City fire and police representatives will be visiting businesses along Whatcom Creek providing the latest information. A limited quantity of sandbags and sand are available on the south side of the city Central Shop facility on Virginia Street until 4:30 p.m. today. People are welcome to fill these bags at no cost.
