Whatcom County Lifts Recommendation to Stop Recreational Shellfish Harvest

WHATCOM COUNTY – The Whatcom County Health Department has lifted its recommendation to discontinue recreational harvest of molluscan shellfish.  “Flood waters receded over a week ago and so has the risk of flood-related contamination of recreational molluscan shellfish harvesting areas“ stated John Wolpers, Environmental Health Manager for the Whatcom County health Department.  Molluscan shellfish include clams, mussels, and oysters.

Citizens are urged to check with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife before harvesting molluscan shellfish for shellfish licensing requirements and open seasons.  License information can be found at www.wdfw.wa.gov.

Citizens can obtain information about beach closures due to pollution or bio-toxins at www.doh.wa.gov
